CitySwitch Workshop

Be part of the urban revitalisation of downtown Newcastle.

Conducted by an international team of artists, architects and designers from NSW and Japan, CitySwitch Newcastle 2010 is a creative workshop investigating how intensive spatial media interventions impact urban enterprise.

“Artists, architects, creators, and thinkers of the city are all invited to take part in the work improve the city's sustainability and livability,” says Project Creator of CitySwitch Newcastle 2010, Joanne Jakovich.

Joanne Jakovich who is a Senior Lecturer at the University of Technology, Sydney explains, "We are working on the ground to create four catalytic interventions within downtown Newcastle.

“The CitySwitch Lab will utilise technological interactions with real sites and urban problems as a platform for constructive and lasting bilateral cooperation,” she says.

The CitySwitch Newcastle Workshop runs from 5pm Tuesday 23rd of February until 8pm Saturday the 27th of February 2010.

The creative workshop is formed by the CitySwitch Lab which consists of academics and students from the UTS School of Architecture – with partners Renew Newcastle and the Australia-Japan Foundation.

Aims.

The overarching aims for the CitySwitch Newcastle Workshop are:

• To establish and deepen professional collaborative relationships between young Australian and Japanese architecture and urbanism professionals

• To focus the exchange of expertise on the issue of urban revitalisation as an approach to urban sustainability

• To utilise real sites and real urban problems as a platform for constructive and lasting bilateral cooperation

CitySwitch Lab invites you to downtown Newcastle to participate in free public installations and performances produced by team of architects, artists, and designers from across NSW and Japan for the 2nd international CitySwitch workshop on urban revitalisation.

• 1.30pm Sticky Streets
Tape art murals on the windows of 3 empty shops combined with impromptu street performance
Time: 1.30pm Come to Renew Newcastle Headquarters to receive instructions to be part of a huge ‘Flash Mob’
2.00-2.03pm 3 impromptu street performances [3-minutes long only!]
3 Locations: Loop Space 109 Hunter St; Corner of Market St & Hunter St Mall; Corner of Wolfe St & Hunter St Mall.

• 3pm Coal Tea Room
A fusion Japanese tea room installation and tea ceremony performance. Come and drink traditional Japanese tea!~
Time: 3.00pm-4.00pm
Location: Corner of Market St + Hunter St Mall, Newcastle

• 4pm Marking Wind Fans
An activated passage from the Hunter Street Mall through to the Harbour using hundreds of hand-made coloured wind fans.
Time: 4.00pm-5.00pm
Location: Hunter Street Mall Footbridge

• 5pm Finale Show
Each workshop team will give a public presentation of their creative outcomes from the week-long CitySwitch Newcastle workshop. The public are invited to review and comment on the works; we invite discussion and debate on the future of downtown Newcastle.

• 7pm Closing Party
All people who attended the shows are invited to the Closing Party where drinks and food will be served.
